The Five Forces framework, created by Michael E. Porter, is a business strategy tool used to analyze the level of competition of an industry and create, or adapt, existing business strategies to it. Its based on the industrial organization of the theory of the firm, to derive the five forces that determine the intensity of competition of and Industry. The analysis aims to derive the attractiveness of the industry, referring to its profitability. When forces drive down profitability, the industry is unattractive, when forces drive up profitability, the industry is considered attractive.

Porters Five Forces are considered the micro environment and consist of those forces close to the organizations that affect its ability to serve the market and make a profit. Changes in the forces requires the organization to re-analyze the marketplace and the industry information. Strategy Analysts derive conclusion from the industry analysis for their decision analysis process, when evaluating where to invest or disinvest. By itself the industry analysis cannot describe the organization profitability, as every company combines their core competencies, business model, network and competitive advantages to achieve profit in different ways. In cases of unattractive profitability, organizations are able to disrupt with unique business models and generate profitability levels higher than the industry.

Michael E. Porter developed the Five Forces Framework in order to overcome the traditional strategy tool SWOT Analysis. Porter’s five forces pillars are based on the Structure Conduct Performance paradigm (SCP) from the industrial organizational concepts.

The Porter’s Five Forces are:

  1. Three Forces Vertical Competition:
    1. Threat of substitute products/services.
    2. The threat of existing competitors.
    3. The threat of new entrants.
  2. Two Horizontal Competition:
    1. Bargaining Power of Suppliers.
    2. Bargaining Power of Buyers.
