Sri Lanka’s varied culture produced a wide array of cuisine with influences from Portuguese, Arab, Dutch, English, Indians and Moors. There are several dishes you need to try when you visit. First is the sour fish curry or fish ambul thiyal – it’s usually a big fish such as tuna, sautéed in local herbs and spices. Another popular dish is the Wambatu moju or eggplant pickle – the contrast of sweet, sour and salty compliment the soft texture of the eggplant. Another must try is the Kottu – its Sri Lanka’s hamburger, its similar to fried rice but instead of rice, pieces of roti are stir fried with herbs and spices.
