How to make a calendar

SlideModel's calendar maker builds a weekly, monthly or yearly calendar for any date, in your browser. Pick the calendar type, set the dates, click any day to add an event, and choose a style. The preview is the actual page you download, so there's nothing to rearrange afterwards.

  1. Pick the calendar type. Weekly shows one week per page, with writing lines or an hourly schedule. Monthly shows one month per page. Yearly shows the whole year on one page, one month per slide, or both.
  2. Set the dates. Choose the month, year or week, and whether weeks start on Sunday or Monday.
  3. Add your events. Click any day to add a colour-coded event or highlight it. Events show up on every page that includes that date — on the month page and as a marked day on the year at a glance.
  4. Style it. Choose Classic, Minimal, Bold, Soft or Dark, a colour theme or your own brand colour, a font, and a slide or paper size.
  5. Download. A free account downloads any page as a PNG. SlideModel Pro downloads every page as a printable PDF or an editable PowerPoint deck.

One page or a whole deck

A calendar can be a single page or a multi-page document, and every page is previewed in the thumbnail strip under the calendar:

  • Monthly: this month only, or several months in a row — up to 24, such as January to December or a school year from August to July.
  • Yearly: one slide with the whole year at a glance, 12 slides with one month per slide, or 13 slides with the overview first. Add a cover slide with the year and your title.
  • Weekly: this week, every week of a month, or the next few weeks — up to a full year of weekly pages.

The PowerPoint and PDF downloads include every page, in order, so a 13-slide year calendar arrives ready to drop into a planning deck.

Printable and editable

Most calendar sites give you a PDF you can only print. Most PowerPoint calendar templates are made for one year and one week start, so every January someone retypes the dates. This tool generates the calendar for the dates you need, in two forms:

  • Printable: choose Letter or A4, portrait or landscape. PNGs are rendered at print resolution; the Pro PDF is vector, so text stays sharp at any size.
  • Editable: in the Pro PowerPoint download, every month and week is a native PowerPoint table. Click into any day to type, restyle the table with PowerPoint's own tools, or change the font. It imports into Google Slides and Keynote with the grid intact.

If you'd rather build a calendar by hand, our guides on how to insert a calendar in PowerPoint and how to insert a calendar in Google Slides walk through the manual method.

Sunday or Monday?

Calendars in the United States start on Sunday. That's the default for US English in Google Calendar, Outlook, Apple Calendar and Windows, it's how most printed US calendars are laid out, and it's this tool's default too. Most of Europe, and the ISO 8601 standard, start the week on Monday — switch under Days & weeks and every page redraws. Week numbers come in both flavours: US numbering, where week 1 contains January 1, and ISO numbering, where weeks start on Monday and week 1 contains the year's first Thursday.

Ideas for your calendar

  • Team and project planning: a month per slide with launches, deadlines and reviews colour-coded by type, for a quarterly business review or a planning deck.
  • School and classroom: a school-year calendar from August to July with term dates and breaks, printed for the classroom wall or shared with families.
  • Events and content: an editorial or social media plan, an event schedule, or a training timetable using the weekly hourly view.
  • Personal: a printable wall or desk calendar with birthdays and holidays marked, in your own colours.

When the calendar is the start of a bigger plan, pair it with a timeline template or a roadmap template, or browse SlideModel's designer calendar templates for a fully designed year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a calendar?

Pick Weekly, Monthly or Yearly, set the month or year, and choose whether the week starts on Sunday or Monday. Click any day to add an event, choose a style and colour, and download. The calendar redraws as you change anything, so what you see is exactly what you download.

Can I make a printable calendar?

Yes. Choose Letter or A4 (portrait or landscape) under Page. With a free SlideModel account you can download any page as a high-resolution PNG and print it. SlideModel Pro adds a vector PDF with every page of the calendar, plus one-click printing.

Can I edit the calendar in PowerPoint?

With SlideModel Pro the download is an editable PowerPoint deck. Each month or week is a native PowerPoint table, not a picture, so you can click into any day and type, recolour the table, or change the font. The deck also opens in Google Slides and Keynote.

How do I make a calendar with one month per slide?

Choose Yearly, then 12 slides under Pages for one month per slide, or 13 slides to add a year-at-a-glance overview first. You can also add a cover slide. The thumbnails under the preview show every page, and the PowerPoint and PDF downloads include them all in order.

Should a calendar start on Sunday or Monday?

In the United States, Canada and much of Latin America, calendars start on Sunday — it's the default in Google Calendar and Outlook for US English, and on most printed US calendars. Europe and the ISO 8601 standard start weeks on Monday. This calendar maker starts on Sunday by default; switch to Monday under Days & weeks.

Can I make a school-year or fiscal-year calendar?

Yes. In the Yearly view, set Year starts in to August (or September) for a school year, or to the first month of your fiscal year. The year-at-a-glance page and the month pages then run across the two calendar years.

Are holidays included?

The calendar can mark New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Halloween, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, and you can switch holiday markers off. Country holiday calendars are coming. Meanwhile you can add any holiday yourself as an event.
