Comparing Options on Many Variables at Once

Most comparison slides break down at four variables. A bar chart needs one panel per variable, a table hides the pattern in a wall of numbers, and a radar chart makes the shape depend on the order you happened to list the spokes in. A parallel coordinates plot handles a dozen variables in one picture without distorting any of them.

Each vertical line is a variable. Each coloured line crossing them is one option, entering each axis at its value. Read it by following a single line: a line that stays near the top is strong everywhere, and a line that plunges between two axes is buying one quality at the cost of another. That crossing pattern is the whole point, and it is exactly what a table cannot show you.

How to Build the Chart

  1. Bring your data in. Rows are the things you are comparing, columns are the variables. Paste a block from Excel or Google Sheets, or type it in. The sample data is a laptop comparison, which shows the trade-off pattern immediately.
  2. Point every axis the same way. Invert the axes where lower is better, such as price or risk. Once you have, the best option is simply the highest line.
  3. Order the axes deliberately. Move the variables that trade off against each other next to each other. This is the single biggest thing you can do to make the chart readable.
  4. Style it for your deck. Choose a palette, drop the line opacity when you have many records, spotlight one option to trace it, and pick a background.

Making It Readable on a Slide

Density is the usual failure mode. With more than a dozen records the lines turn into a thicket, and the fix is opacity rather than deletion: drop the lines to around 30 percent and the crowded regions darken into a visible band, which tells the audience where the typical option sits. Then spotlight the one or two records the slide is actually about, and everything else recedes into context.

If you are presenting a recommendation, spotlight your recommended option and leave the rest dimmed. The audience sees both the choice and the field it was chosen from, in one image, without a second slide.

Built for Slides, Not for Dashboards
